At which marathon did you get your first BQ?  What was your finishing time? Tell us a little about the race.

1995 Disney Marathon

2:40 Started out conservative with first two miles over 7 minute pace, then reeled off 5;50’s or faster until mile 23, when I fell apart. Last mile was 7:21. 20 mile split was 1 hour, 57 minutes

How long had you been running when you ran your first BQ?

22 years. Started at age 13 running the half mile in junior high

Did you run in college or high school?

Yes and yes.

What was your approximate lifetime mileage at the time of your first BQ?

A rough approximation of 40,000 based on 35 a week for 22 years

How many miles did you run in the year before your first BQ?

Approximately 3,640

Approximately how many races did you run in that year?

20

Did you follow a canned program? If so, which one? If not, can you give us an idea of what your training philosophy was?

A speed workout, tempo run and long run a week.

Did you run with a running club or utilize a coach?

The Miami Shores Running Club. This was our qualifier for the 100th Boston and we sent seven people from our group to the race

Did cross training play a role in your training? If so, how?

No

Did speed work play a role or specific workouts play a role in your training? If so, how?

As per above, we did them once a week except for a three month summer break

Any other thoughts you would like to share with those of working towards a BQ?

I trained with a great group of people, including experience marathoners, and therefore went into the race completely prepared.
