Injured II

God damn it. I think I am injured again. Went out for a leisurely five miler yesterday afternoon around the National Mall and felt great the whole way. when I was almost back to school I ran into a friend who is leaving town and we chatted for fifteen minutes or so and then we I started walking towards to the gym I had pretty severe pain in my right glute. Sucked. Double sucked because I had to ride my bike four miles home after that and it hurt pretty much the whole way.

Anyway, I think this is an itbs thing. I hope not, but I fear it is. I did the whole RICE plus massage the area when I got home last night and figured I would see how it felt today and make a decision about running or not. Well today it still hurts pretty bad and I think running is out for today and probably tomorrow. I was really looking forward to hitting thirty miles this week, but that just isn’t going to happen now and I have to be ok with that. Its good to set goals and to try and stick to them, it isn’t good to run through injuries. Especially not ones that hurt this bad.

So the revised plan for the rest of the week is to take today and probably tomorrow off. I’ll see how it feels on Saturday and if it isn’t killing me, I’ll do a short run, if it is still hurting, I will take the whole rest of the week off and start fresh on Monday. This is a long haul and I have to be ready to deal with these set backs along the way.

Can I suggest a foam roller? That is definitely the best ITBS solution. The black ones — like this (http://www.sportsmith.net/ItemForm.aspx?item=P25023&Category=6e1f7372-f373-4d0d-b743-d438bd416bb7) will last way longer than the white ones which get mushy. Prepare for pain if you’re not used to it.

Injury is so so so annoying. I strained my hamstring while trying to run yesterday and i am *barely* running at all these days. Annoying. I hate getting older — in this sense.

Thanks for the link. I am definitely going to get a roller. Have you suffered from ITBS as well?

And yeah, I am so sick and tired of getting injured! I hope this round of injuries ends soon.

amazingly, i’ve never had itbs issues, though i’ve definitely had tight it bands (you will feel it on the foam roller when they are tight!)

i feel like i’ve had just about everything else though. i think it’s pretty normal to have a lot of injuries as you are first ramping up to serious mileage, unfortunately.
