Stir Crazy

I am trying to be a good boy and listen to the doctor. I haven’t run now in six day, and I am losing my mind. It is one thing to not get a run in because you’re too busy, that is frustrating, but to not get a run in because you’re injured is a whole other level of frustration. Physically, I’m feeling a lot better. I told the doctor I would run again till Tuesday, but man that seems like a long, long way away.

    Dear Sean,

I can relate. I used to run 4 miles around the University in the city where I lived and if you have not done it in a while, you miss it. I walk now. I walk about four times a week and it is my time to put my brain an auto and just walk. I walk this circular road that many people in my neighborhood walk : it takes about an hour. It is really my time to either put my brain on auto and just take in the scenery or to refect on my life. I can honestly say that there were years in my life where I really needed some time to be alone and think about things in order to really know what I wanted or how to deal with things. Some people run with a partner. I have done it, but I prefer not to. I find walking the same. Sometimes I need time to myself to unwind or think about things. With regard to the injury, if the doctor tells you not to run, then you should not run. A lot of people make their injuries worse by not taking time off and many runners injure themselves by overtraining. My husband has joggers knee now from overtraining. He was training for a marathon and now if he runs too much he develops this knee problem. If you injure yourself running you need to stop and try to heal the injury completely, but some injuries are chronic and they will return. You should not risk re-injuring yourself.
