Went out on 2:42 pace in the heat, slowed down 10 sec/mile for each of the last 10 miles, pretty miserable experience.

No, I did marathon specific workouts

Yes, though I got away from it too much in the months leading up to the race, more would have been better. Ran a full XC season 4-6 months before the race and then switched over to marathon-work.
