At which marathon did you get your first BQ?
Tell us a little about the race.
This was my first time racing at the Poconos (2014) and overall it was my fourth marathon. It’s a great race for a PR, and have done so there since. I had just missed my BQ a few weeks prior, and had three weeks of speed workouts prior to this race in May since my last marathon. Anyways I had great weather and a few friends I made at the start to help me through the 26.2 miles.
How long had you been running when you ran your first BQ?
I ran cross country in college but had only been marathoning for less then two years.
Did you run in college or high school?
What was your approximate lifetime mileage at the time of your first BQ?
5 thousand miles
How many miles did you run in the year before your first BQ?
3 in the calendar year before my BQ
Approximately how many races did you run in that year?
That year a total of 4 marathons, and numerous shorter races
Did you follow a canned program? If so, which one? If not, can you give us an idea of what your training philosophy was?
No, Miles and more miles regardless of speed for a vast majority of them
Did you run with a running club or utilize a coach?
Did cross training play a role in your training? If so, how?
Nope just me and miles of road
Did speed work play a role or specific workouts play a role in your training? If so, how?
Not a large roll until the last month or two of qualifying
Any other thoughts you would like to share with those of working towards a BQ?
Remember it’s a marathon, enjoy the journey and most importantly log as many miles as you can. Even if you can’t get long runs in, run two or three times a day. Best of luck and hope to see you in Boston!
