It is a truism in running that people who run in the morning are more likely to stick a running regime than people who run at any other time of day. The reasoning is pretty straight forward – there are less distraction in the morning to get in the way of getting your run in. Most people have way less scheduling conflicts at six in the morning than they do at six at night.
Many, many times in my life I have tried to become a morning runner, and I have always failed, but now, it is time to get serious. It is safe to say that I am looking at a very busy summer. I am studying for the bar exam, I am working part time, and I am trying to squeeze in a healthy relationship and thirty miles a week of running, coming home from work at six and facing four hours of homework doesn’t leave a lot of room for running in the evening, so if I am going to get the runs in, they must start happening in the morning. Lucky for me, E is also a runner and much more of a morning person than I am. Monday, she got us both up and out of bed, and I got four miles in before seven am. Awesome. This morning, she got up and I acted like a lazy pile of poop and stayed in bed. That cannot happen. So, starting tomorrow, the new rule is Monday through Friday at least four of the five days, I MUST get up and run in the morning before doing anything else and I’ll start posting the time of the run in my weekly training total round ups to keep myself honest. If you see more than one evening run in there, feel free to scold me. I need the social pressure.
