Barefoot Running

I have been following the recent craze in barefoot running pretty closely, but I haven’t yet jumped into it myself. I have two main concerns, the first is that it seems a new running fad comes along every couple of years and takes (especially the online) world by storm. Chi-running, pose method, whatever. Barefoot running definitely seems to make more sense, but the risk of injury also seems higher. Second, I’m a larger runner running in an urban enviroment (currently weighing in at 188 pounds) and I think that while the body may have been built to run barefoot, my unshod ancestors where almost surely a lot lighter… and not running on pavement.

Still, I’m curious. This thing is definitely getting big. All the online message boards I look at have sections devoted to barefoot running, and this weekend, when I watched the Marine Corp marathon (a friend’s brother was running, and he finished in 3:33!) in the pack that was on pace to finish around the 3:30 mark I saw two guys in vibrams, and one completely barefoot. That definitely peaked my interest. People are running marathons, and they are running them pretty fast, with no shoes. Maybe I should give this a closer look.

Oh, and to show you how mainstream this has gotten, here’s (another) article mentioning barefoot running in the New York Times. And here’s a video of google founder Sergey Brin talking smart while wearing his vibrams.

I am with you on holding out on this trend. I bet what ends up happening is that we stay in regular shoes, but overall they get less beefy. I want to talk to those barefoot finishers the day AFTER the marathon to evaluate the idea….

Yeah, I am definitely interested in a slightly lighter shoe, but I am not sure I am ready for barefoot (or vibrams yet).

Generally, I run in gel kayanos, but last time I went to the local running store, they had me run around the block in some slightly lighter weight brooks (I forget the model). They felt amazing. I may have to go back and check them out again…

Running barefoot is about learning to run correctly, and that if you do… you don’t need shoes. Yes it is a trend, and many claim it will solve all the worlds problems, but there are serious merits to it.

Many people some small amounts of barefoot cross-training in addition to their regular shoe-wearing runs. At the very least it will help your form and improve foot strength which prevents running injuries at-large.

Barefoot is not for everyone, and may be an over-extension of the ideal solution… but it is absolutely worth further investigation.

Josh, thanks for commenting! I am definitely going to explore a lighter shoe, and possibly some barefoot running. I do think it probably improves one’s form, I’m just not sure if going completely barefoot is a good idea for someone as heavy as I am who runs about fifty percent of the time on concrete.

Yeah, I am with you. I don’t know what to think about all this barefoot hype. It sounds crazy but kind of makes sense at the same time. I am sure it could work to improve form but is probably not right for everyone.

It does sound crazy and make sense at the same time… I think a little barefoot running would probably be good for everyone, but I think a lot is something people should be careful with.
