It is safe to say that I am obsessed with running. Really, truly obsessed. I think about it all the time. I want to read about it all the time and I want to actually be doing it all the time. I promised myself at the start of this year that I would not make the mistake I have made a dozen times before, I would not jump into a big mileage week with no preparation, and, hopefully, by being reasonable, I’d avoid getting hurt. I have largely stuck to that promise and (knock on wood) I have not yet gotten hurt.. Huh, amazing right? If you follow one of the basic rules of running (start slow) things work out. Still, I wish I was running more.

I am fascinated by high mileage running and the people who do it – elite marathoners, ultra runners, crazy dudes on the internet who run fifty miles on treadmill. Crazy as this may sound, they’re an inspiration. If so and so from a message board can run 250 miles in a week, I can get in these five miles. Next week, if all goes as planned, for the first time ever, I will run more than forty miles in a week. I can’t wait. Next week forty miles… next year? who knows.

Way to go Sean! Just be careful. You don’t read about those folk’s down time. One lady I know used to run 70 miles a week. Now, she’s been in injury recovery mode for almost a year…..

You’re totally right, Glenn. I really, really do not want to get injured. So I am taking it slow, and as best I can, listening to what my body is telling me. I won’t ever run 200 miles in a week, that’s for sure. But seventy? Maybe…
