Once a Runner

The only true way is to marshal the ferocity of your ambition over the course of many days, weeks, months, and (if you could finally come to accept it) years. The Trial of Miles; Miles of Trials? – Once a Runner

I started reading John Parker’s Once a Runner this week, and I can’t understand why I haven’t read this earlier. It is the kind of book that the average person would have no interest in, but speaks to a runner like that no other book I have ever encountered. Right now I am in the hardest week of running I have ever attempted and this story of a college miler busting his ass to break four minutes makes for inspiring bed time reading.

Sure the book is cheesy, and the the plotting is a little clunky, but who cares. This book is the best distillation of the feeling of what it means to be a runner that I have ever read. If you haven’t read it, you really need to.
